Mel

Mel’s extensive catalogue of work is available as downloads on all the major download stores [Mel (Dr Ian D Mellish)] as well as ‘hard-copy’ real CDs from Mel's website.

To accommodate the requirements of the download stores, particularly iTunes, Mel has edited all the long and continuous tracks into segments of ten minutes (well a second under) or less. The segments seamlessly ‘top and tail’ to the previous and following segments, or parts as we have called them, enabling the long and continuous complete track to be reassembled.

The works listed below illustrate the format that is seen on download stores. Additionally "all incense and dreamcatchers" has now been added to "bandcamp" for a choice of high quality downloads ... other albums to be added over the coming weeks.

Just in case you miss the statement “Click on the image for an enlarged view” … an enlarged view of Mel’s CD cover artwork which have the same quality of excellence, thought, care and intrigue as his music, can be seen by clicking on the CD image thumbnail.

Mel's catalogue page started life as a single page, Internet Explorer handled all 89 audio excerpts without a problem, but Firefox, Safari and Opera browsers have limits (up to 15). so there are now a total of 6 Pages to accommodate this number of audio files. All of the music works can be accessed in the table below.

Television and the Bomb

Television and The Bomb

Television and The Bomb :

Trailer
14 Jan.'88 - Breck's Nook, York. (originally for quad. tape)
An advert for the piece 'Surface Quartet' ('88), it is actually the 'frame' material from that piece before splicing.

Greetings from in front of a TV set

I Vertical Hold (The Coming Of Sound)
20 Feb.'84 - Derwent, York. (originally for quad. tape)
Loosely inspired by the work of painter Bridget Riley. "...the coming of sound" was a comment about the transition from silent movies to the 'talkies'. The piece was made in the days of physically splicing tape - there are dozens of cuts.

II Horizontal Hold (Muzak)
3 Jun.'84 - Derwent, York. (originally for quad. tape)
From the old days of the television test-card - and the test-card muzak, gently smeared across the screen (horizontally).

Partched
4 Dec.'89 - Chingford.
Mixed for a TV company, this uses a jump-loop study created from an excerpt of a Harry Partch work, mixed in with other bits and pieces

Fazed dog/The Letter (CD mix)
31 Jan.'92 - Chingford.
The underlying recordings were in collaboration with Peter Garvey & John Godfrey. We would spend hours in my studio messing about with loops and samples, this was created from a collection of messings about called the 'Ice smile loops' ('91).

Rising Fugitive
2 Jul.'96 - Westcott (original) 24 Jun.'99 - Pyhra. (for harp, televisions and live electronics.)
A CD version of the piece Rising '--', the second name being chosen from what was on the TV at the time. This is a realisation for unreal harp* although the live version is for four real Irish harps.

Hidden States
14 Mar.'86 - Derwent, York. (originally for quad. tape)
Atomic war "as seen on TV". ('Land of Hope & Glory' and 'God Bless America' are hidden in the intro.)

Washing Fluid Art

Washing Fluid Art

Washing Fluid Art :

Purcill Washes Whiter
15 Mar.'91 (original version) 2 May '99 - Pyhra.
A reworking of 'Fantasias for Viols' by Henry Purcell. This stemmed from a happy accident in York involving a record deck, a tape deck and a conductor friend. For the CD version I mixed in a new end.

Flying Deep (Pollock Mix 1)
10 Feb.'89 - Chingford.
Inspired by the artist Jackson Pollock's work and loosely based on the painting "The Deep" (1953). A live 'flying' mix of lots of tape machines 'pouring' sound, plus a little cleaning up.

Tinguely
10 July '84 - Derwent, York. (originally for quad. tape)
Based on the sculpture "Méta-Harmonie II" (1979) by Jean Tinguely. This is a very large and noisy kinetic sculpture which includes connected wheels, various beaters and an upright piano. For this piece I recorded the sculpture for half an hour or so and the sounds are in there somewhere.
